• Since January 2018 I have been the department lead for Glaucoma in Oxford University Hospital Trusts (OUHT). Specifically, I have:
  • Overhauled the virtual service run for patients, including working with the lead Optometrist to devise a protocol to safely move patients from clinic to the virtual service. I personally review these virtual assessments to ensure that safety is upheld. I plan to audit this service next year.
  • Recruited a further Consultant colleague with specialist interest in Glaucoma. I both short listed from the original submissions and was the department representative on the interview panel.
  • Developed and initiated the minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) service offered by the Trust. OUHT is now one of only 20 centres in the UK offering endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation (ECP). I have also devised a regional paradigm for clinical indications of: Xen implant, ECP, trabeculectomy and tube surgery.
  • Supervised junior doctors in producing patient leaflets which will significantly increase patient knowledge and aid in the consent process. I edited and amended these leaflets, currently in the production phase.
  • Produced an advert for the glaucoma fellowship, including overhauling and designing the successful applicant’s timetable.
  • Become the clinical lead for coding in Ophthalmology. I have had meetings with both the Ophthalmic manager and the coding department to devise methods to ensure correct remuneration for procedures done in both theatre and outpatients.
  • Started weekly departmental glaucoma teaching. I organised a venue, recruited delegates from the multi-disciplinary team and recruited external speakers. I have supervised a specialist trainee doctor in allocating topics to the various delegates.
  • Been recruited to chair the inaugural Oxford Anterior Segment meeting, June 8th 2018. I have worked with Thea drug company to organise a venue, recruit eminent speakers nationally, organise a trainee competition (including a prize) and ensure CPD points are allocated.
• In January 2017, I completed Imperial College Leadership and Management course, which has helped me hone techniques and focus on my individual leadership style. I have also undertaken the Training the Trainers course, which has helped immensely to supervise in a structured manner.
• I produced the overhauled and updated version of the West London Handbook in 2016. I liaised with different specialties to find the up-to-date protocols, as per NICE and RCOphth. Encompassed in this was allocating mentors for junior trainees and producing a section on ARCP targets within the book. The following year, I was involved in updating to an app version for smartphones.
• I have undertaken a Quality Improvement Project looking at DNA rates within WEH and ways we can circumvent non attendance. One important point I elicited was that most patients prefered an email service, since letters are quite often not received. I presented my findings and recommendations at a board meeting in April 2017.
• I devised the on-call rota for University College London (2013-2014) and Imperial College London ophthalmic trainees (2011-2012).
• In March 2012, I was involved in the organisation of recruiting patients from outreach camps for cataract extraction in Mata Nanaki Hospital, Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, India. My specific role included examining patients to ascertain suitability for surgery, distributing near add spectacles for presbyopic patients, organising transport to reach the main hospital site and post-operative prescription of medication.

I participated in the national ‘Hospital at Night’ project as the junior doctors’ representative at Southampton General Hospital 2006-2007. My specific role included monitoring the nature of bleep requests and analysing the management of patients admitted overnight. I presented this information to senior committees in order that well-informed decisions regarding staffing outside sociable hours could be made.

• From April 2018, I have been giving monthly teaching sessions to patients at the Oxfordshire Association for the Blind.
• Since August 2017, I actively participate in the regional teaching for Oxford Deanery trainees. I also run a weekly departmental session for trainees and optometrists.
• I am a lecturer at the MSc Clinical Ophthalmology, Institute of Ophthalmology. Most recently, I gave a Powerpoint presentation ‘Clinical Ophthalmoscopy: diagnostic features’ and practical session on direct ophthalmoscopy, January 2017.
• I was part of the mentoring scheme at Imperial College whereby I was responsible for a Specialist Trainee year 1. My specific roles include surgical/simulator supervision, help with portfolio, and addressing training requirements.
• During my fellowship, I ran the weekly Glaucoma Journal club at Imperial College, discussing our own research and ‘hot topic papers’. I allocated papers to be appraised and then critiqueed this assessment prior to presentation. In addition, I presented papers, produced a timetable of presenters, facilitated swaps and arranged for special updates to be discussed, i.e. EVER, ARVO, EGS. I also organised and ran weekly interactive group surgical teaching sessions. This involved discussing and analysing cataract surgery videos, including difficult cases specifically pertaining to glaucoma.
• Through 2015-2017, I actively participated in the West London teaching programme Lectures I gave included ‘Glaucoma tube surgery’, ‘Biometry’, ‘Neovascular glaucoma’ and ‘Safety in Ophthalmology’.
• In March 2012, I co-chaired a teaching programme for final year Imperial College students, entitled ‘Ophthalmology at a glance: for finals’. I arranged the location and gathered speakers, ranging from specialist trainees year one through to consultants. I also delivered an interactive lecture on painless, gradual loss of vision.
• I was invited to give a talk at the Royal Society of Medicine: ‘Life as a trainee’ for undergraduates Februrary 2011.

• I am on the International Council of Ophthalmology for setting the glaucoma questions for the annual ICO exam. The other members of the glaucoma section are five consultants. We have had formal training and the finalised exam was submitted May 2017. The inaugeral exam was a success and I have now just submitted a further 30 questions for the second examination in 2018.
• I am registered with the College to complete cirriculum assessments on the Royal College ePortfolio.
• I have been an OSCE examiner at St George’s Hospital and University College London for MBBS. After receiving formal training for this role, I most recently examined at the fundoscopy station for final year medical students July 2014.

• I am a reviewer for both the General Practicioner journal ‘Innovait’ and ‘International Journal of Ophthalmology’.
